Tuesday Night Musicality and Choreography Class

Class Description:
Learn and understand the distinct types, concepts, terminology, and structure of historical jazz and blues (phrasing, breaks, choruses, and bridges). Learn about musicality: choosing a dance, and how to choreograph entire songs or portions. Learn how to use the basic dance steps you already know (or new ones) and link them into an improvised social dance or performance routine.
The Musicality and Choreography Class will incorporate footwork and styling from both solo and partner dances, including Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Balboa, Blues, Solo Jazz, and Lindy Hop. While it is not required to know of all of these dances to take the class, knowledge of Lindy Hop Swingout basics is required. This class will be geared toward experienced social dancers that are at an Intermediate level and up.
Hep Jen will draw on her experience of 13 years of DJing for swing dancers to produce musical examples demonstrating a variety of styles and song structures. Jen will also draw on her experience as a choreographer, an instructor, and an avid social dancer to guide you to make each dance truly fit the music.

Here are the musical and dance styles we will cover each week:
Week 1: Solo and Partnered Charleston
Week 2: Collegiate Shag and Balboa
Week 3: Solo (Vernacular) Jazz and Lindy Hop
Week 4: Lindy Hop and Blues
Cost for the 4-week class series: (two options)
$35 pre-paid for the 4-week series, which includes the class only, OR
$65 pre-paid for the 4-week series, which includes discounted admission
to the Tuesday Night Jump dance at the Verdi Club (4 blocks away) after class.
Drop-ins are also allowed for $10/class only, or $17/class plus dance.
Online registration is closed.
A limited number of drop-ins may be allowed, if space is available.
No partner is required. We will be dancing both solo and with partners in each class.

Home of Tuesday Night Jump. Dancing until after midnight!
Class and dance locations have plenty of street parking, and easy access to public transportation. Close to MUNI routes 9, 22, 27, 33, 90 and the 16th Street & Mission BART Station.
Though pre-registration is recommended, you may also register the first night of class (with cash or check), if space is available. Please arrive a few minutes early the first night of class to check in.
